Why this exists

Arangetram Registry began with a personal question.

My daughters learned Bharatanatyam for about fifteen years before reaching their stage-debut milestone. Watching that journey made something very clear to me: the final performance lasts for a day, but the work behind it represents years of learning, discipline, practice, family commitment, and guidance from a guru.

I felt that experience deserved more than a programme kept in a drawer or a video remembered mainly by the people who attended. The artist’s journey and talent should be acknowledged. The years of training should have a place in the record. And the guru and lineage behind that achievement should receive proper credit too.

That idea became Arangetram Registry.

One milestone, many traditions

The name of this platform comes from arangetram, the term closely associated with a Bharatanatyam stage debut. But the purpose of the registry is broader than one art form, one language, or one regional term.

Across Indian classical arts, communities may use terms such as arangetram, rangapravesham, rangapravesha, rangmanch pravesh, arangettam, or other names rooted in their own traditions. Dance, vocal music, and instrumental traditions also have distinct ways of marking an artist’s readiness and progress.

We want artists to describe their milestone in the language of their own tradition. What connects the registry is not one vocabulary word. It is the years of learning, the relationship between teacher and student, and the moment that work is brought to the stage.

The artist’s journey deserves to be remembered

A stage debut can represent a visible moment at the end of a much longer process. Behind it may be years of lessons, corrections, rehearsals, physical and artistic discipline, family support, and the gradual development of confidence and interpretation.

Arangetram Registry is intended to give that journey a lasting place: who the artist is, what they trained in, who taught them, the lineage they carry, and the milestone they reached. Over time, those individual records can also show something larger — how living classical traditions continue from teacher to student and from one generation to the next.

The guru’s work is part of the achievement

Stage readiness does not happen in a single season. Gurus work with students over time, teaching technique, repertoire, discipline, interpretation, context, and the expectations of the tradition. The guru decides when a student is ready to take on a significant performance milestone.

That is why the registry does not treat the guru as a footnote. Artist profiles acknowledge the guru and lineage, and gurus can maintain their own listings describing their school, teaching background, and the forms they carry forward.

In classical music, this teacher-student relationship can be especially immersive. Carnatic music has historically been transmitted through guru-shishya parampara, including gurukula forms in which a student lived with the guru and learned through close observation, repetition, practice, and daily proximity to the teacher’s musical life. Today’s learning can take many forms, but that tradition illustrates how deeply teaching and lineage are woven into the art itself.

The artistic registry and the Vendor Directory serve different purposes. Artist and guru records document artistic journeys and lineages. Vendor listings help families find practical services around a stage debut.

How a profile or listing gets published

Every artist, guru, and vendor submission is read by a member of our team before it appears. Artist profiles are checked against our guidelines and require the supporting certificate requested by the platform. Vendor listings and portfolio photographs are also reviewed before publication.

This is a policy review, not authentication. We do not contact schools to confirm certificates, independently verify lineage or teaching claims, or certify a vendor’s credentials, quality, or suitability. Our Disclaimer sets out exactly what we do and do not check.

Safety is part of the design

Many artists reach important stage milestones while they are still young. That shaped the platform from the beginning.

There is no way to email an artist directly through this site. Messages are read by our team first and forwarded only when appropriate. For artists under 18, the public profile shows less information, and a parent or guardian remains involved in the contact process.

Vendor enquiries are moderated too. Vendors are adult businesses and may receive enquiries from families and other visitors, but those messages are held for review before being forwarded.

These protections make the platform a little less convenient. We think that is the right trade.

A growing community, not a finished archive

Arangetram Registry is being built as a long-term record of living classical arts. Its value will grow as more artists, gurus, families, traditions, and supporting businesses contribute their part of the story.

The aim is simple: give sustained learning proper recognition, give gurus visible credit for the traditions they transmit, help families preserve meaningful milestones, and make it easier for future generations to understand the artistic lineages that came before them.

We are not affiliated with any school, sabha, academy, examining body, or vendor. We do not take commission on arrangements between people or businesses who find each other here. Listing is free.
